YOUTH DIRECTOR POSITION DESCRIPTION
The
youth director is a person of Christian faith who is responsible for developing,
supervising, and participating in programs for the junior high (grades 6-8) and
senior high (grades 9-12) youth of Edina Morningside Community Church.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. SENIOR HIGH (grades 9-12)
a.
Plan and teach Sunday morning classes (Bagel Bunch), arranging for
substitutes as needed (est. time 12 hrs/mo).
b.
Plan and lead one (1) or two (2) meetings or events each month that might
include in-church activities such as lock-ins as well as field trips, retreats,
mission trips and other programs as may be developed (est. time 8 hrs/mo).
c.
Work with youth and parents annually to plan for and lead a summer trip
(e.g., 2009 mission trip, 2010 trip to UCC Denomination youth event, or other
trip) (est. time: 2 hrs/mo, plus approximately one-week travel).
2. JUNIOR HIGH (grades 6-8)
a.
Plan and teach/lead two (2) evening classes each month that will include:
inspirational material, group building activities, service events, or games
(est. time 8 hrs/mo).
b.
Assist the Pastor with teaching confirmation, every other year beginning
September 2009 (est. time 8 hrs/mo).
3. OTHER
a.
Participate with other church staff and volunteers in involving junior
and senior high youth in church services and events such as the Advent Workshop,
Christmas Pageant, and Family Sunday services.
b.
Support youth through conversation, phone calls, personal meetings, and
other avenues of expressing care and interest (est. time: 2 hrs/mo).
c.
Halloween Haunted House – work with parents, and junior and senior high
youth to plan, set up, execute, and clean up for this annual event (note: the
planning usually takes place during already scheduled youth activities, and
there are adults in the church who have worked on this and have experience in
theater, etc.).
d.
Communicate with the Pastor, congregation, parents, and community with
regard to junior and senior high youth through such avenues as mailings, phone
calls, the Messenger, and periodic parent meetings. Provide most of own
secretarial services, e.g., typing, designing of fliers, copying, etc. A
computer and other equipment are available at the church for use by the Youth
Director.
e.
Manage the Youth Ministry portion of the Christian Education budget and
provide monthly updates to the Board of Christian Education.
f.
Attend the monthly meetings of the Board of Christian Education. (est.
time 2 hrs/mo)
g.
Attend staff meetings:
-
General staff meeting, every other month. (est. time 2 hrs/mo);

Monthly meetings with Pastor and/or other staff. (est. time 1 hr/mo)
h.
Utilize the resources in the church, the community, the Minnesota
Conference and the National United Church of Christ, and attend meetings of the
wider church relevant to youth as time permits.
i.
Recruit, provide leadership training, and support youth program
volunteers.
j.
Promote and advocate for youth and their families in all areas of
congregational life.
4. COMPENSATION
This is a permanent, part-time position.
Compensation is based upon a schedule of 10 hours per week, 10 months of the
year, understanding that these hours are flexible. Paid vacation will be in
keeping with church policies for part-time employees. Professional expenses will
be reimbursed up to the amount specified in the annual budget. Such expenses
include travel and mileage reimbursed at IRS guidelines, room and board, and
continuing education including registration fees, books, and tuition for
pre-approved workshops and classes. The Board of Christian Education must
approve continuing education expenditures. All expenses must be submitted to the
Church Treasurer for reimbursement.
5. ACCOUNTABILITY
The Youth Director is accountable to the Board of
Christian Education and is supervised by the Pastor. An evaluation will be
conducted at the end of 90 days, at the end of the program year and from then on
annually. Such evaluation will be conducted at the direction of the chair of
the Board of Christian Education and the Pastor.
6. BACKGROUND
CHECK
It is understood that a background check of the Youth Director will be made
and that information received in said report may result in the immediate
termination of this employment.
